Resolution 51/210

Sixth Session

23rd Meeting (PM)

AD HOC COMMITTEE ON TERRORISM TO NEGOTIATE DIFFERENCE ON COMPREHENSIVE CONVENTION,

NUCLEAR TERRORISM TREATY IN INFORMAL CONSULTATIONS

The Ad Hoc Committee on Measures to Eliminate Terrorism met briefly this afternoon to formally adopt the programme of work for its sixth session which began this morning and ends on 1 February.

The Committee, which is currently negotiating the final elements of a comprehensive treaty to combat international terrorism, approved a work plan that sets aside most of the session for informal consultation among delegates to resolve the differences on those issues.

For background, see Press Release L/2989 of 28 January.

Time was also allocated for a discussion of the outstanding issues on the draft convention for the suppression of acts of nuclear terrorism.  Following a query from the representative of Syria, the Chairman, Rohan Perera (Sri Lanka), announced that delegates would also have the opportunity to discuss the possibility of convening a high-level United Nations conference on terrorism.

The Committee will meet again in plenary on Wednesday afternoon, 30 January, to hear reports from the coordinator of the Committee’s informal consultations.
