Biographical Note


NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Shofry Abdul Ghafor, the new Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.


Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Ghafor served as the Director of the Department of Multilateral Economics in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from

2001.  From 1998 to 2001 he was Director of the Department of Politics in the same ministry.  From 1995 to 1998 he was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Washington, D.C.


Between 1993 and 1995 Mr. Ghafor served as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Brunei Darussalam to the United Nations in New York.  Between 1990 and 1993, he was Assistant Director of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  Beginning in 1986, he was Assistant Director in the Political Department.  From 1983 to 1986 he served as Second Secretary in his country’s Embassy in Jarkata, Indonesia.  He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Diplomatic Service Department as an Administrative Officer in 1981.


Mr. Ghafor received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom, in 1981 and his Masters Degree in International Studies from Australian National University in Canberra in 1992.


Born on 21 October 1958, Mr. Ghafor is married with three daughters.
