PRESS STATEMENT ON AFGHANISTAN BY PRESIDENT OF SECURITY COUNCIL

Following is the text of today’s press statement on Afghanistan by the President of the Security Council, Ole Peter Kolby (Norway):

Council members met in informal consultations and discussed the situation in Afghanistan, in particular the establishment of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

Council members had a useful discussion on the draft resolution introduced by France, which we hope can be adopted shortly.

Council members acknowledged the importance of maintaining security in Kabul, and expressed their intention to extend the mandate of the International Security Assistance Force after its expiry on June 20, 2002.
