NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BELARUS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Belarus, Sergei Ling, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his present appointment, Mr. Ling was, since February 1997, Prime Minister of Belarus. From 1994 to 1996, he was Vice-President of the Council of Ministers. He has also served in various capacities in the Government of Belarus, in the field of economics.

From 1986 to 1991, Mr. Ling served as Chairman of the State Committee on Pricing Policy and Vice-Chairman of the State Committee for Economic Planning. He was Vice-Chairman of the Minsk district Legislative Committee in 1982.

Mr. Ling graduated in economics from the Belarus Agricultural Academy in 1960.

Born on 7 May 1937 in Minsk, Belarus, Mr. Ling is married with three children.
