MOVSES ABELIAN OF ARMENIA ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF FIFTH COMMITTEE

19980909 Biographical Note Movses Abelian, who was this afternoon elected Chairman of the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) for the fifty-third session of the General Assembly, has served as the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations since December 1997.

Prior to that appointment, he was Armenia's Chargé d'affaires to the United Nations. Mr. Abelian, who was first assigned to the Permanent Mission in 1993 as Second Secretary, has served as Vice-Chairman of the Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on Financial and Legal Matters during the Assembly's forty-eighth session and as Vice-Chairman of the Fifth Committee during the Assembly's fiftieth session. He has also been a member of the Armenian delegations to numerous high-level international conferences, as well as to ministerial-level meetings of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Mr. Abelian began his career in 1989 as Assistant Professor and Vice- Dean of the Department of Applied Mathematics at Yerevan State University. In 1991, he became Associate Professor. Mr. Abelian holds a degree in applied mathematics from Moscow State University. From 1992 to 1993, he studied foreign economic relations at New York University.

Born in 1963 in Yerevan, Mr. Abelian is married and has one son.
