What is Advocacy

  • Advocacy is a set of actions undertaken by a group of individuals or organizations working in concert to build consensus, foster a favourable climate, or seek support for introducing or changing specific policies, strategies and programmes.
  • Advocacy is important for galvanizing broad-based political commitment and financial support for population activities, and placing population concerns on development agendas.
  • The purpose of advocacy is to promote or reinforce a change in policy, programme or legislation.
  • Advocacy aims at winning support from others, i.e. creating a supportive environment.
  • Advocacy relies on information, education and communication (IEC) strategies and techniques to accomplish its purpose.
