FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA (FSM)

FSM Census Analysis Workshop

The 1994 census has provided invaluable experience to many Federated States' Micronesians, especially in data collection and processing, which has contributed to building census and survey-taking capacities. The FSM census itself was an excellent example of cooperation between the Government and various international and regional agencies providing financial and technical assistance, principally the UNFPA, the US Census Bureau, and the South Pacific Commission. A Census Data Analysis Workshop was held in February to complete the national and state census reports. The CST Population Statistics Adviser helped revise chapters of the national report during his visit to FSM on 16 February to 4 March. The Adviser also collected additional information and held consultations with various government and NGO personnel to update a population and development sector review.

Sector Review of Gender, Population and Development

Ms. Sultana Alam, Gender, Population and Development Adviser, undertook a mission to FSM to prepare a sectoral report on gender, population and development. She met with a large number of government and non-governmental contacts during the two week visit on 26 February to 8 March to review the status of women as well as policies, programmes and institutional capacities relating to the advancement of women. This sectoral review is expected to provide critical inputs in mainstreaming gender concerns as a cross-cutting dimension into all activities undertaken in the three UNFPA core programme areas.
