Ms. Kishi has been newly appointed as a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador. She joins actress Jane Fonda and her husband Ted Turner as UNFPA Goodwill Ambassadors. Ms. Kishi, one of Japan's most prominent movie and stage actresses, with an acting career that spans more than 40 years, first achieved fame in the 1950s as the star in the hit movie Kimi-no-Na-wa' (What's Your Name?).
Ms. Kishi signed the contract on March 6 during her meeting with Dr. Nafis Sadik, UNFPA Executive Director. As Goodwill Ambassador', Ms. Kishi will represent the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in her travels throughout the world and, in addition, will film, write and speak out on population issues, receiving a symbolic payment of US$1 for her work throughout the year.
Ms. Kerstin Trone,Deputy Executive Director (Programme)Ms. Kerstin Trone (Sweden) has been appointed the new Deputy Executive Director (Programme) of the United Nations Population Fund. Ms. Trone's appointment is effective from 1 May 1996. She replaces Mr. Jyoti Singh who has retired. Ms. Trone joined UNFPA in 1975 as Evaluation Officer, Evaluation Section, (1977-80). She worked as Programme Officer, in the Latin America Section, Programme Division from 1980-81 and became Deputy Chief of the Section. From 1981 to 1990 she was Chief, Evaluation Branch, Policy and Evaluation Division before becoming Director, Latin America and the Caribbean Division in 1990. In 1993, she was reassigned to Zimbabwe as Director, Country Support Team for Southern Africa.
Prior to joining UNFPA, Ms. Trone was Section Head responsible for assistance to Latin America in the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (SIDA), Stockholm.
The United Nations World Youth Forum will be convened in Vienna on 25-29 November 1996. The Forum will be hosted by the Austrian Federal Youth Council with support of the Austrian Government and the Mayor of Vienna. The main objective of the Forum is to promote the implementation of the United Nations World Programme of Action for Youth to the year 2000 and Beyond which was adopted by the General Assembly last December.
In support of the UN World Youth Forum, UNFPA will be participating actively in preparations for the Forum as well as in the Forum itself. To give voice to youth in population-related matters, UNFPA intends to Organize a Youth Essay Writing Contest for the World Youth Forum on the theme "Promoting Responsible Reproductive Health Behaviour: The Youth Perspective". Open to youth aged 15-24, the essay-writing contest will be an international contest and entries must be received by 15 September 1996. At least 15 winners will be awarded travel fellowships to attend the World Youth Forum in Vienna. A booklet containing the essay contest winning entries, and an accompanying video, may also be produced.
Further information on this contest will be disseminated to Pacific island countries by UNFPA Representatives in Suva and Port Moresby.
