Demographic Information
There are approximately 23 million refugees and 26 million internally displaced persons living in camps worldwide, more than three quarters of whom are women and children. Relief services have historically focused on immediate life-saving interventions so only a small number of refugees have access to some type of reproductive health services. The refugees therefore face many problems including extraordinarily high fertility, high-risk pregnancy, increased risk for STDs (including HIV) and sexual violence. In addition, the length of stay in refugee camps is increasing worldwide.
After identifying a lack of resources, clear policies and guidelines, and technical know-how as the main obstacles towards the development of reproductive health services for refugees, a group of American and European organizations formed the Reproductive Health for Refugees (RHR) Consortium. The RHR Consortium consists of: CARE International, the International Rescue Committee, JSI Research and Training Institute, Marie Stopes International, and the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children. The goal of the RHR Consortium is to support the institutionalization of reproductive health services in refugee settings worldwide.
This selected bibliography has been designed to provide key information to support the rapid development of reproductive health services for refugees and internally displaced persons.
Reproductive Health Focus
Five essential and complementary technical areas of reproductive health included in this directory are:
Family Planning
HIV/AIDS/STDs
Sexual and Gender Violence
Gynecological Services
Maternal Care
Also included are materials on:
Policy and Advocacy
Reproductive Health Indicators and Program Planning
Demographic Information
The directory is divided into each of the eight topics listed above. The types of information and resources listed include materials used in refugee settings, reports about specific program experiences, relevant reproductive health reports, studies and materials from countries of origin of the refugees and displaced persons, materials from countries where refugee outflows can be expected in the near future, and reproductive health for refugees policy and policy analysis.
Sources
Information has been collected from members of the RHR Consortium, through searches in on-line catalogs, from libraries and key organizations such as WHO, UNFPA, UNHCR, USAID and its Cooperating Agencies, and from other organizations involved in relief and development work.
Structure
The directory has been divided into the eight topics listed on page three. References are multiply listed under all applicable topics and are arranged chronologically within each topic. Each reference provides information on the author, source and year of publication. Materials are available in English unless otherwise noted. Key Words follow each of the references and include refugee country of origin. Geographical Terms, when included, refer to host countries.
Obtaining Materials
Materials can be obtained by contacting the author, source, organization or publisher. Most journals cited are available through Pop-Line. Materials that are listed as unpublished can be obtained by writing to: JSI Research and Training Institute

Acknowledgments
Many thanks go to Quynhdao Tran for her dedication to this project. Her unending energy has enabled the Selected Bibliography to reach those concerned about refugees in order that the reproductive health needs of refugees and internally displaced persons may be better served. Thanks also go to the many individuals and organizations who have combed through their materials to contribute useful information for inclusion in this bibliography. The financial support for this project by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is also greatly appreciated.
