AIDSFILES NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION SERVICE BEGINS

This issue of AIDSFlash carries an announcement that the AIDS Health Promotion

Exchange, an international newsletter on HIV and AIDS, will now be available

throughout the

region as part of the SEA-AIDS services. Making other newsletters from the

HIV/AIDS

community available through this electronic network is a service we would

also like to offer (free

of charge) to other organizations. If you would like your organization's

newsletter to be

made available through electronic mail, just let us know.

An introduction to the first newsletter archived in this way follows:

"AIDS/STD Health Promotion Exchange" is a quarterly 16-page newsletter

co-published by

the Royal Tropical Institute in The Netherlands and the Southern Africa AIDS

Information

Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS) in Zimbabwe. Each issue focuses on a

specific theme

and/or target audience regarding HIV/AIDS and STD-related health promotion and

education; special care is taken to include information from developing

countries.

Past issues have addressed topics such as the use of theatre, incorporating

a gender

perspective into programmes and reorienting health and social services.

Other issues have

focused on programmes targeting different audiences such as youth, women,

men, drug

users, sex workers and clients, people with learning disabilities and people

living with

HIV/AIDS. The 1996 issues will deal with: human rights, religion and

HIV/AIDS, sexual

health education for youth and using the mass media.

See below for instructions on how to retrieve this newsletter from the

AIDSFiles archives.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS, MEETINGS AND TRAINING IN THE SE ASIA REGION

As part of an initiative organized by Computer Services Department of Chiang

Mai

Universtity in Northern Thailand, a computer-based inventory of

non-governmental

organizations based in the region is being compiled. In the first instance

the inventory

will be fosusing on Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand.

The aim of this activity is to help facillitate communication between

interested

individuals and the numerous NGOs working in SEAsia. It is hoped that the

resulting

inventory will provide a useful tool that will aid individuals and

organizations in this

task.

If your organization would like to include contact details and a brief

description of

activities in this inventory retrieve the file congo7.txt above, complete it

and send it to:

bruce@cmu.chiangmai.ac.th

IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO ALREADY, WHY NOT send sea-aids details of

forthcoming events and activities in the region. This might include

meetings, seminars,

forthcoming study tours, training opportunities or electronic events.

Details should be sent

to: tfran@mozart.inet.co.th

INSTRUCTIONS FOR RETRIEVING FILES

[YOU COULD PRINT THIS SECTION FOR FUTURE REFERENCE]

The materials mentioned above are stored in a computer. The computer is

like an electronic

filing cabinet - it has drawers and files. You have to tell it which drawer

to open and which

file to select.

Following each of the document descriptions above there is a number and a

file name given

in brackets . So for example, if you want to retrieve the AIDS Health

Promotion Exchange

above, the brackets say (62.5 Kb; nlett1.txt). The number shows the size of

the file (62.5

kilobytes in this case; a BIG file!), and the filename first shows the name

of the drawer (in

this instance 'nlett') and then gives the file number (for this file it is

1). To obtain a copy of

this document you send an e-mail to:

ftpmail@inet.co.th

with the following in the text of the message:

open

get /pub/sea-aids/nlett/nlett1.txt

Other files can be retrieved using the same general format for your message.

For example:

open

get /pub/sea-aids/drawername/filename

Because these requests are answered automatically by computer, you must be

very careful to

copy the format of the message carefully (including spaces and slashes).

If you would like further instructions for retrieving files in this way,

send an e-mail to:

majordomo@lists.inet.co.th

with the following in the text of the message:

get sea-aids retrev.idx

For a list of all the materials available in the archives send an e-mail to

the same address

with the

following in the text of your message:

get sea-aids listing.idx

If you would like a list of the subject areas used for classification of

materials send the

following message:

get sea-aids categ.idx
