CANDLELIGHT MEMORIAL ON 19 MAY 1996
HIV/AIDS is a worldwide threat to the health of all people. This threat
is increased by discrimination against people with HIV and AIDS, and
against people at risk for HIV and AIDS due to their poverty, gender,
ethnicity, sexual orientation, drug use, and/or other factors.
This statement is from the declaration of the 13th Candlelight Memorial and
Mobilization, which commemorates those who have died of AIDS and offers
support to those living with HIV and AIDS.
This years event theme will be *AIDS Discrimination is a Global Epidemic*.
Through this issue of AIDSFlash we would like to highlight and support the
Memorial by providing suggestions and information for local organizations
that would like to participate in the event, and voice their statements
against HIV/AIDS discrimination.
This week five relevant materials have been added to the AIDSFiles archives
including:
- an event overview and a description of previous community-based events,
including those organized in the SE Asia region
- a description of the event theme and a call for your organization to
show your support for a declaration against HIV/AIDS discrimination
- a theme background document, which includes statements against
discrimination from the WHO Representative in Thailand, and the heads of
UNDP and UNAIDS
- an example of the Memorial events planned for thos year within the SE
Asia region - news from the Indonesia Candlelight coordinating group
- a model press release for you to use to increase the media coverage of
the memorial and local events.
Instructions for retrieving these files by e-mail are given in detail
below. Please pass these materials on to people and organizations in your
area. Contact details for the international organisers of the event are
included in each of the materials.
If there is any way that the sea-aids services can help with your plans for
19 May, either by asking for information or by relaying the events you have
planned in the region to colleagues, please let us know.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR RETRIEVING FILES
[YOU COULD PRINT THIS SECTION FOR FUTURE REFERENCE]
The materials mentioned above are stored in a computer. The computer is
like an electronic filing cabinet - it has drawers and files. You have to
tell it which drawer to open and which file to select.
Following each of the document descriptions above there is a number and
a file name given in brackets . So for example, if you want to retrieve
the Candlelight declaration above the brackets say
(5.0Kb; congo2.txt). The number shows the size of the file (5.0
kilobytes in this case), and the filename first shows the name of the
drawer (in this instance 'congo') and then gives the file
number (for this file it is 2). To obtain a copy of this document you send
an e-mail to:
ftpmail@inet.co.th with the following in the text of the message:
open
get /pub/sea-aids/congo/congo2.txt
Other files can be retrieved using the same general format for your
message. For example:
open
get /pub/sea-aids/drawername/filename
Because these requests are answered automatically by computer, you must be very
careful to copy the format of the message carefully (including spaces and
slashes).
If you would like further instructions for retrieving files in this way,
send an e-mail to:
majordomo@lists.inet.co.th
with the following in the text of the message:
get sea-aids retrev.idx
For a list of all the materials available in the archives send an e-mail to
the same address with the
following in the text of your message:
get sea-aids listing.idx
If you would like a list of the subject areas used for classification of
materials send the following
message:
get sea-aids categ.idx
