E-MAIL SOURCES OF HIV/AIDS INFORMATION

SEA-AIDS is the only e-mail discussion group and information resource that

deals specifically with HIV/AIDS issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Other

services are available though, some providing a forum for discussion of

scientific and medical themes, support networks for people living with HIV,

and others providing specific information and support for care-providers and

health workers. This issue of AIDSFlash provides a brief description of

these other e-mail groups, as well as instructions on how to join them.

JOINING ANY OF THE GROUPS DESCRIBED IS FREE OF CHARGE.

We should point out though that much of the discussion and information

available through these groups is not directly relevant to this region, but

may be useful if you are working or need support in a particular area. One

thing that might not be obvious at first is that you can join and leave

these groups as you please, and so you can join for a time period that suits

you, or just join for a while to see what they are like. For this reason,

when you join most groups will also automatically send you instructions on

how to leave.

If this number and range of information sources looks a bit daunting, don't

worry - each week the SEA-AIDS moderators examine the content of ALL of the

groups listed and makes information relevant to this region available

through the SEA-AIDS services (like the media clips below and some of the

materials added to AIDSFiles each week). Here are the details of the

services available:

be useful, however, in selecting and understanding treatments that are

available, and also provide additional background information for those

lobbying for increased access to treatments/drugs that are not yet

available. Many thanks to the AIDS Treatment Data Network for this valuable

information.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS, MEETINGS AND TRAINING

The University of Oregon will host the Northwest Consortium for Southeast

Asian Studies seventh annual conference on April 25-27 1997. The theme of

the conference is "Interwoven Identities: Southeast Asia in the Greater

Asia-Pacific Community." Contemporary issues such as the environment, women,

development, or democracy and their implications; regionalization of the

economies of Asia (e.g. AFTA, APEC) and its consequences; historic or

contemporary cultural ties such as religion, language, the arts, or the

impact of 'westernization.' Other panels and topics may also be proposed.

For info mail: CAPS@darkwing.uoregon.edu

IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO ALREADY, WHY NOT send sea-aids details of

forthcoming events and activities in the region. This might include

meetings, seminars, forthcoming study tours, training opportunities or

electronic events. Details should be sent to: tfran@mozart.inet.co.th

INSTRUCTIONS FOR RETRIEVING FILES [YOU SHOULD PRINT THIS SECTION FOR FUTURE

REFERENCE]

The materials mentioned above are stored in a computer. The computer is

like an electronic filing cabinet - it has drawers and files. You have to

tell it which drawer to open and which file to select. Following each of

the document descriptions above there is a number and a file name given in

brackets. So for example, if you want to retrieve the fact sheet on AZT

above: (care50.txt; 4.2Kb) - the number shows the size of the file (4.2

kilobytes in this case), and the filename first shows the name of the

drawer (in this instance 'care') and then gives the file number (for this

file it is 50). To obtain a copy of this document you send an e-mail to:

ftpmail@inet.co.th

with the following in the text of the message:

open

get /pub/sea-aids/care/care50.txt

Other files can be retrieved using the same general format for your message.

For example:

open

get /pub/sea-aids/drawername/filename

Because these requests are answered automatically by computer, you must be

very careful to copy the format of the message carefully (including spaces

and slashes).

If you would like further instructions for retrieving files in this way,

send an e-mail to:

majordomo@lists.inet.co.th

with the following in the text of the message:

get sea-aids retrev.idx

Please let us know if you have any retrieval problems.

FEEDBACK PLEASE! Please tell us what you like or do not like about sea-

aids, or get in touch if you need any help using these services.
