======================================================== SEA-AIDSFLASH Number Sixteen - 2 October 1996 The bi-weekly electronic news digest on HIV and AIDS in the South East Asia Region (Subscriber total today: 530) ________________________________________________________________ CONTENTS - Human rights, health and HIV/AIDS - Media coverage of HIV/AIDS from the region - New information and resources available in SEA-AIDSFiles - Forthcoming events, meetings and training in the SE Asia region - How to retrieve materials from SEA-AIDSFiles HUMAN RIGHTS, HEALTH AND HIV/AIDS The goals of public health (to prevent and control the worldwide epidemic of HIV/AIDS) and the goal of human rights (to ensure human rights and dignity of all individuals, whether infected with HIV or not) are deeply inter-connected. Efforts to prevent HIV transmission and to provide adequate care to people with HIV/AIDS are compatible with and complement efforts to promote and protect human rights and dignity. To coincide with the second International Conference on Health and Human Rights this week in Boston (organized jointly by the Harvard School of Public Health / Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights), this issue of AIDSFlash focuses on the issue of HIV/AIDS and human rights. The quote above is taken from one of the resources on human rights that have been added to the AIDSFiles archives. As usual, full instructions on how to retrieve these materials by e-mail are given at the end of this edition. Of particular relevance to the Asia Pacific region is the proposal for human rights priority issues, presented to the Royal Thai Government jointly by 52 groups of people living with HIV/AIDS in Thailand. The computer is like an electronic filing cabinet - it has drawers and files. You have to tell it which drawer to open and which file to select. Following each of the document descriptions above there is a number and a file name given in brackets. So for example, if you want to retrieve The human rights proposal prepared by the Thai PWA groups: (hrgt1.txt; 6.8Kb) - the number shows the size of the file (6.8 kilobytes in this case), and the filename first shows the name of the drawer (in this instance 'hrgt') and then gives the file number (for this file it is 1). To obtain a copy of this document you send an e-mail to: ftpmail@inet.co.th with the following in the text of the message: open get /pub/sea-aids/hrgt/hrgt1.txt Other files can be retrieved using the same general format for your message. For example: open get /pub/sea-aids/drawername/filename Because these requests are answered automatically by computer, you must be very careful to copy the format of the message carefully (including spaces and slashes). If you would like further instructions for retrieving files in this way, send an e-mail to: majordomo@lists.inet.co.th with the following in the text of the message: get sea-aids retrev.idx Please let us know if you have any retrieval problems.
