Fourth Annual World Bank Conference on Environmentally Sustainable Development:
Rural Well-Being: From Vision to Action
Associated Event: Delivering Social Services to the Rural Poor
Tuesday September 24, 1996, 8:30am-5pm, George Washington University,
Marvin Center, 800-21st. Street, NW, Colonial Commons Room (2nd floor)
The Human Development Department of the World Bank is co-hosting a one day
seminar on effective approaches to delivering social services to rural areas.
Experts from organizations such as, Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee
(BRAC), World Vision International, George Washington Center for International
Health, and the Education Development Center, will address a range of issues
affecting the delivery of rural social services. These include new technologies
for reaching the poor, NGO involvement, decentralized participatory planning,
and community financing and credit. Case studies from Latin America, Africa,
and Asia will demonstrate how these elements are incorporated into World Bank
health, education, nutrition, and reproductive health projects. This seminar
will provide a forum for open discussion and the sharing of ideas, in particular
with participating members of the NGO community.
