Note: The data for Canada and the United States (Northern America) and Australia and New Zealand (Oceania) are classified by place of birth; the data for Belgium, France and the Netherlands are classified by country of citizenship, and those for Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom are classified by place of last or next residence. The total for Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom are presented under the label Western Europe. Data for the United Kingdom are available only as of 1965.
The data for the United States include information on the number of migrants legalizing their status as the result of the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986. Those legalizing their status as a result of the general amnesty program were redistributed over the 1972-1982 period according to a linearly increasing trends. Those legalizing their status under the special agricultural workers program were redistributed uniformly over the 1982-1986 period.
This table is included in the paper to be published in "Beyond the Numbers: A Reader on Population, Consumption and the Environment", Laurie Anne Mazur, ed. (Washington, D.C.: Island Press), 1994.
