BUSINESS HOURS: Friday is the official holiday. Banks, government
offices and other organizations are closed on Fridays and Saturdays
Working hours are between the hours of 08.00 to 14:00 and shops are
open between the hours of 9:00 to 21:00.
CLOTHING: In September, light cotton semi - conservative garments
are recommended. Sunglasses, sun oil and other items for hot
climate are also recommended. Those who wear contact lenses should
also bring glasses as fine dust may cause irritations.
CURRENCY: The Egyptian Pound is the official currency. There are
no restrictions on how much foreign convertible currencies may be
brought into the country.
CUSTOMS: A declaration form must be completed at the port of entry
to show the importation of valuable goods such as cameras and
jewelry. ICPD participants will be met and assisted at the airport.
ELECTRICITY: The current power is 220 volts. Sockets are the
standard continental round - pronged plugs.
HEALTH: Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving within 6
days after leaving infected areas. Please check with your local
health authorities before arriving in Cairo.
LANGUAGE: Arabic is the official language, however, most common
foreign languages are also used.
MUSEUMS AND OTHER SIGHTS: Agricultural Museum, Beit El Siheimi,
Beit El Kereitiya, Beit El Umma, Citadel, Coptic Museum, Egyptian
Civilization Museum, Entomological Society Museum, Ethnological
Museum, Manial Palace Museum, Military Museum, Mokhtar Museum,
Moustafa Kamel Museum, Museum of Islamic Art, Museum of Modern Art,
Papyrus Institute, Planetarium, Police Museum, Post Office Museum,
Railway Museum, Royal Carriage Museum, Sakakini Palace, Solar Boat
Museum, Monasteries and the Wax Museum.
TELEPHONE: Direct access to other countries is available. AT&T and
MCI users can call the USA, from all major hotels, by accessing
their special numbers.
TIME: The conference will take place in September when Egypt is
three hours ahead of the Greenwich Mean Time.
VISAS: Citizens of all countries are welcomed to enter Egypt.
Certain foreign nationals must obtain visa prior arrival while
other can get at Cairo airport. Also travellers from certain
countries must carry the Yellow Health Certificate. Please check
with your travel agent or airline to avoid any inconvenience on
arrival.
