Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly

New York, 3 August

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Sam K. Kutesa, welcomes the consensus reached yesterday on the outcome document of the United Nations Summit to adopt the post-2015 development agenda.  “This is a historic achievement” said the President, adding that “this transformative agenda will open a new chapter in development history”.

The document entitled “Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” lays out 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). From eradicating hunger to protecting our planet, from ensuring prosperity for all to fostering peaceful and inclusive societies, the new agenda seeks to address all dimensions of poverty.

The agreement is the result of an unprecedented open and transparent process. Numerous stakeholders were engaged in consultations at the national and international levels, including Member States, civil society, business, parliamentarians and academia. President Kutesa thanks all those who have participated and contributed to this historic endeavor. He also extends his appreciation to the co-facilitators of the negotiations, Ambassadors Macharia Kamau of Kenya and David Donoghue of Ireland, for their tireless efforts and leadership.

The President is looking forward to the adoption of the post-2015 agenda by world leaders at the Summit to be held on 25-27 September in New York: “As the United Nations celebrates its 70th anniversary, we are setting our world on a sustainable course, one that will ensure a better future for our Planet and all its inhabitants”.
