The election of the President of the seventy-sixth session of the General Assembly will take place in the General Assembly Hall on 7 June 2021 at 10 a.m., in line with Rule 30 of the Rules of Procedure.

In accordance with the established regional rotation, the President of the seventy-sixth session of the General Assembly is to be elected from the Group of Asia-Pacific States.

In its resolution 71/323, entitled “Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly”, the Assembly decided to call upon candidates for the position of the President of the General Assembly to present their vision statements and to conduct informal interactive dialogues with Member States, thus contributing to the transparency and inclusivity of the process.

To allow for adequate time between the informal interactive dialogues and the election, the President of the seventy-fifth session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir, convened the informal interactive dialogues mandated in resolution 71/323 on 6 May at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the General Assembly Hall. The video recordings of the informal interactive dialogues can be viewed online by following the links in each candidate’s profile below.

Civil society representatives and individuals were invited to submit their questions to candidates for President of the seventy-sixth session of the General Assembly for their response during the interactive dialogues. Questions were collected via an online form, which has now closed.

Update: The election of the President of the 76th session of the General Assembly took place in the General Assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 7 June 2021. Honourable Abdulla Shahid was elected as President of the 76th session of the General Assembly.
