Senior Adviser and Team Coordinator | Development, Climate and Migration

 

Abdelghani Merabet is a Senior Advisor and Team Coordinator on issues related to development, climate change and migration in the Office of the President of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly.. He also leads on Second Committee, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), High Level Political Forum (HLPF), energy, water, biodiversity, desertification and land degradation. Additionally, he serves as liaison with the G77 and China and the Arab Group.

Previously, Abdelghani served in the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly of the 69th, 70th and 71st Sessions as a Senior Adviser in charge of climate change, oceans, sustainable development and Fifth Committee issues.

Before joining the Office of the President of the General Assembly, he served at the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations in New York, from 2009 to 2013, mainly covering Second and Third Committee issues. He was elected as Vice-Chairperson of the 19th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development. He also was the Algerian chief negotiator chairing the Group of 77 and China during the Rio+20 Summit on sustainable development, held in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. The same year, he chaired the Group during the Sessions of Second Committee, as well as the Economic and Social Council.  He also served as national focal point of Algeria to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Abdelghani worked for the Ministry of Finance of Algeria for five years before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2006, where he began his diplomatic career in the Department of Economic Relations and International Cooperation.

His academic background includes a specialization in Economics and Finance from the Ecole Nationale d’Administration of Algiers and two postgraduate degrees, one in Political Science with a major in defense and international security from the University Jean Moulin in Lyon, France, and one on diplomacy and international relations from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, United States of America.
