Second Committee and Sustainable Development Goals


Abdelghani MerabetAbdelghani Merabet leads on issues related to the Second Committee within the Office of the President of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. He is also the focal point for issues related to SDG 13 on climate actionm climate change, QCPR and countries from the Non-Aligned Movement, the Arab Group and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Before joining the Office of the President of the General Assembly of the 69th and 70th sessions as a Senior Adviser in charge of climate change, sustainable development and fifth committee issues , served at the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations, in New York, from 2009 to 2013, mainly covering Second and Third Committee issues. He was elected as Vice-Chairperson of the 19th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development. He also was the Algerian chief negotiator chairing the Group of 77 and China during the Rio+20 Summit on sustainable development, held in Rio de Janeiro, in 2012. The same year, he chaired the group during the sessions of Second Committee, as well as the Economic and Social Council.  He also served as national focal point of Algeria to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Abdelghani worked for the Ministry of Finance of Algeria for five years before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2006, where he worked for the Department of Economic Relations and International Cooperation.

His academic background includes a specialization in Economics and Finance from the Ecole Nationale d’Administration of Algiers and two postgraduate degrees, one in Political Science with a major in defense and international security from the University Jean Moulin in Lyon, France and the other on diplomacy and international relations from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, United States.

Abdelghani  speaks Arabic, French, English and Spanish.
