PRESS RELEASE: UN Member States and Partners to discuss the Culture of Peace

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 6 September 2017 – The Culture of Peace will be the subject of a High-Level Forum at the United Nations on Thursday convened by the  President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson.

The annual meeting aims to highlight emerging trends that impact on the realization of a culture of peace. The event will also feature a panel discussion on “Sowing the seeds of the Culture of Peace: Early Childhood Development is the beginning.”

Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Betty Williams and the Secretary-General’s Senior Advisor on Policy Ms. Ana Maria Menendez will speak at the event amongst other high-level experts and speakers.

President Thomson said, “It is important, now more than ever, to realize the power of Sustainable Development Goal 16 to develop peaceful and inclusive societies.”

The meeting’s Chair and Moderator Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury said, ‘The seed of peace exists in all of us. It must be nurtured, cared for and promoted by us all to flourish. Peace cannot be imposed from outside, it must be realized from within.”

Participants of the meeting will include Member States and Observer States; UN agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector and other stakeholders.
