PRESS RELEASE: President of the UN General Assembly to visit Hong Kong

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 11 August 2017 – The President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson, will visit China next week as part of a follow-up on the outcomes of The Ocean Conference held at the UN in June 2017. While there he will meet with officials from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and with Ocean officials and researchers.

On Tuesday, 15 August, President Thomson will participate in an Ocean stakeholders meeting with researchers who will present their findings related to the state of the Ocean and programmes to work on improving conditions.

On Wednesday, 16 August, President Thomson will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural “Save our Ocean” event, the first of a series of outreach events to support follow-up to The Ocean Conference (held 5-9 June 2017 at the UN, New York). The event will focus on the dissemination of messaging generated by The Ocean Conference, including the 1,395 voluntary commitments that were lodged at the Conference.

President Thomson will meet with the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), H.E. Mrs. Carrie Lam, and the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in Hong Kong SAR, H.E. Mr. Xie Feng, along with officials from the State Oceanic Administration of China.

The President will be accompanied by Senior Advisors Mr. Zhang Yi and Mr. Merabet Abdelghani. Travel costs will be met by the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs.
