PRESS RELEASE

President of the UN General Assembly to engage education leaders and global audience in discussions at High-level SDG Action Event on Education

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 27 June 2017– Education leaders from around the world will convene at the United Nations on Wednesday to discuss ways to advance action on Sustainable Development Goal 4 which aims to “ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.”

The High-Level SDG Action event organized by the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson, and expected to attract more than a dozen Ministers of Education, aims to engage a global audience in the discussions which will be live streamed on UN Web TV, YouTube, and Facebook Live — a first for a high-level meeting of the General Assembly.

Speakers include the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova, the CEO of The Global Partnership for Education Alice Albright, CEO of Save the Children USA Carolyn Miles, the President of Education International Susan Hopgood, the CEO of the Varkey Foundation Mr. Vikas Pota, and the founder of the Building Africa’s Future Foundation, 18-year-old Saul Mwame from Tanzania.

The event will offer an opportunity for new partnerships and also highlight innovations in education through a panel discussion and a “marketplace” which will showcase solutions to delivering low-cost or free learning resources to students and educators.

To capture the voice of young people, UNESCO’s Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) will host a youth roundtable discussion called iTAGe which will feature a Twitter discussion on what young people think about the state of education in the world. The outcome will be presented by a youth rapporteur at the closing segment of the High-Level meeting.

The event will also feature musical performances by Australian singer Emmanuel Kelly, American violinist Yasmine Van Wilt, and the Williamsburg Charter High School Choir from Brooklyn, New York.

The implementation of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals has been the central theme of the 71st Session of the General Assembly. The high-level event on education is one of five SDG Action Events organized by the President of the General Assembly since January 2017. The other events included “Building Sustainable Peace for All”, “Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda”, “SDG Financing Lab” and “Innovation”.

A press conference will be held at 1:00 pm on 28 June in room S-0236 of the United Nations Secretariat Building.
