President of the UN General Assembly to visit Washington D.C.

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 20 March 2017 – The President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson, is in Washington D.C. from 20 to 22 April to participate in the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, as well as to take part in other official engagements, with the purpose of increasing momentum in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On 20 April, President Thomson will deliver opening remarks during the Seminar “Implementing the 2030 Agenda: From Commitment to Action” and attend the opening of a Finance Ministers’ Meeting that will discuss how to finance the achievement of universal, sustainable access to safely managed sanitation, water and hygiene. Later in the day, he will hold a bilateral meeting with Ms. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

On 21 April, the President of the UN General Assembly will open a Ministerial Luncheon on Agenda 2030 Implementation, and maintain different bilateral meetings with the Vice President of the European Investment Bank, Mr. Jonathan Taylor, the World Bank Group’s Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda, UN Relations, and Partnerships, Mr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, and the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs of Indonesia, Mr. Luhut Pandjaitan. He will also brief partners of the Global Environment Facility on the Oceans Conference that will take place in New York from 5 to 9 June, 2017.

During his final day in Washington D.C., President Thomson will attend the 2017 Global Infrastructure Forum, co-hosted by the European Investment Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, deliver an opening statement in the plenary dedicated to the role of the UN in Sustainable Infrastructure, and meet the Managing Director and World Bank Group Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Joaquim Levy.

During his trip, President Thomson will be accompanied by the Office of the President of the General Assembly’s Chef de Cabinet Tomas Anker Christensen and Senior Advisers on SDG Finance Albena Melin and Fernando Zelner. Travel and accommodation expenses for the President and accompanying officers will be covered by the Office of the President of the General Assembly’s Trust Fund.
