High-level SDG Action Event
Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Agenda
UNITED NATIONS, New York, 22 March 2017 — In line with the theme of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly, to deliver a universal push on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson, will convene a High-level SDG Action Event entitled “Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Agenda”, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), at UNHQ New York on 23 March 2017.
The one-day high-level meeting will aim to invigorate political momentum on climate change and to reinforce synergies between climate action and delivering on the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. It will also seek to increase awareness on the urgent need to ramp up ambition and implementation related to the 2020 targets of the development agenda and the action required to keep the global average temperature rise well below two degrees.
Opening remarks will be made by the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson; the Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. António Guterres; and the Executive Secretary of UNFCCC, Ms. Patricia Espinosa. This will be followed by a stock-taking panel comprised of the Minister of the Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs, responsible for International Climate Relations of France, Hon. Ségolène Royal; the Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund Secretariat, H.E. Howard Bamsey; the Governor of Washington State, Hon. Jay Inslee; the CEO of AbzeSolar S.A., Princess Abze Djigma; and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations, H.E. Luke Daunivalu.
In the afternoon, the Plenary meeting will continue, complemented by two multi-stakeholder interactive Sessions, on “Implementing Solutions” and recognising “2020 as Opportunity” to help reach the 2020 SDG targets and NDC ambitions. The day will conclude with a Wrap-up Session capturing highlights of the Plenary and both Sessions.
