Excellencies, I would like to take a moment to say a few words on the sudden passing this morning of my dear friend and colleague, Ambassador Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations.

The late Ambassador’s passing has both shocked and deeply saddened us all. We have lost one of the most respected and influential members of the UN family. His name will live on in the  annals of UN history. We will remember him for his intellect and diplomatic skill, his good humour and consideration for others. We all experienced and respected the pride he took in serving his country and the passion and resolution he brought to his job.

On behalf of the General Assembly, I express heartfelt condolences to Mrs Irina Churkin, to his family, to all the staff of the Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN and to the Government of the Russian Federation, which this day has lost one of its truest sons.

At the appropriate moment in the coming period of mourning, in full consultation with the relevant parties, I will convene a formal meeting of the General Assembly to pay tribute to the memory of the late Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, H.E. Mr Vitaly Churkin.
