High-level dialogue on “Building Sustainable Peace for All: Synergies between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustaining Peace Agenda”

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 19 January 2017 — The emergence of increasingly complex and intractable armed conflicts around the world, humanitarian crises arising from massive population displacement and the harmful impact of these daunting challenges on achieving sustainable development have brought a new urgency to the United Nations’ efforts to prevent conflict and maximize the prospects for building sustainable peace.

Equipped with lessons learned from recent global efforts in the area of peace and security, UN member States have committed to a new approach to sustaining peace, as outlined in Security Council resolution 2282 (2016) and General Assembly resolution 70/262. Sustaining peace seeks to prevent the outbreak, escalation, continuation and recurrence of conflict and to address its root causes. This demands the integration of the peace and security, human rights and development pillars of the UN, as well as ensuring inclusive national ownership of peacebuilding processes. Sustaining peace is both an enabler and an outcome of sustainable development, and this interlinked nature of peace and development is reflected in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by member states in September 2015.

In order to deepen the understanding of the links between Sustaining Peace and the 2030 Agenda, and to explore ways to leverage these synergies to establish a coherent, integrated and comprehensive implementation approach among political, security and development actors, the President of the General Assembly will convene a High-level Dialogue entitled “Building Sustainable Peace for All: Synergies between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustaining Peace Agenda”, on 24 January 2017 at UN Headquarters, New York. The event will include the participation of the UN Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, the President of the Economic and Social Council and the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission.

The meeting will feature the participation of up to 20 Ministers and over 100 civil society organizations. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas throughout the event, including through three interactive workshops on the role of women and youth, the management of natural resources, and transparent, inclusive, and accountable institutions, in building sustainable development and in sustaining peace.
