Senior Adviser, Climate Change

Abdelghani MerabetAbdelghani Merabet leads on issues related to climate change, resilience and disaster risk reduction, water, oceans and the law of the sea within the Office of the President of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Before joining OPGA, he worked for the Ministry of Finance of Algeria for five years before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2006, where he worked for the Department of Economic Relations and International Cooperation.

Abdelghani served at the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations, in New York, from 2009 to 2013, mainly as delegate covering Second Committee and Third Committee issues. He was elected as Vice-Chairperson of the 19th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development. Abdelghani was the Algerian chief negotiator who chaired the Group of 77 during the 2012 Rio+20 Summit on sustainable development, held in Rio de Janeiro. He also chaired the G77 and China, during the sessions of Second Committee as well as the ECOSOC during the same year.

He served as Senior Adviser in the Office of the President of the 69th session of the General Assembly, in charge of climate change and Fifth Committee issues. He also served as national focal point of Algeria to the UNFCCC.

Abdelghani  speaks Arabic, French, English and Spanish.
