High-level Thematic Panel Discussion
“From Commitment to Implementation: Ten Years of the Responsibility to Protect”
26 February 2016
On 26 February, the President of the General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, will convene a Thematic Panel Discussion to mark the 10th anniversary of Responsibility to Protect.
The adoption of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) at the 2005 United Nations World Summit represented a historic commitment by the international community to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
Bringing together leaders and eminent experts involved in the creation, development, and implementation of R2P, this event will provide an opportunity to chart the course for the second decade of R2P and to consider how it can best contribute to future efforts to protect populations from mass atrocities and will also include an interactive segment for Member States and civil society to contribute to the discussion. Panelists will reflect on the progress made to date, current and emerging challenges, and opportunities to accelerate implementation.
