Statement attributable to the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Mogens Lykketoft, on the nuclear warhead explosion test carried out by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on 9 September 2016
United Nations, New York, 9 September 2016 – I am appalled and gravely concerned by the announcement made earlier today by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on the carrying out of a nuclear explosion test, which I condemn in the strongest terms.
This irresponsible and unacceptable act represents a serious threat to international peace and security and is a clear violation of Security Council resolutions 1718, 1874, 2087, 2094 and 2270.
I call on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to pursue its objectives in a peaceful manner, abandon its nuclear weapon and missile programmes and comply with all its international obligations.
