”Today I want to share with you my vision for the type of world we can create for every woman and every girl by 2030. It will be a world where ideally we no longer need to call for gender equality. Such a world is not a utopia. It is sketched out in the Sustainable Development Goals. It is the world that 193 world leaders committed to bring about last September. And it is within our grasp. We have the resources and the know-how to make this happen.” – Mr. Lykketoft says at closing plenary of the day Women Deliver conference – a four-day conference with more than 5,500 delegates from 169 countries which is believed to be the largest global gathering to discuss women’s and girls’ health, rights and wellbeing in the past decade.

The President of the UN General Assembly had the pleasure to participate in both the conference and a series of side events in Copenhagen.

Following his strong call for gender equality, President Lykketoft signed the Deliver for Good wall. Deliver for Good is a new global campaign launched at the Women Deliver conference that brings attentions to investing in women and girls. The campaign highlights 12 critical areas linked to the Sustainable Development Goals that, with greater investment, could improve the lives of women and girls and speed up efforts to achieve gender equality.

Additionally, Mr. Lykketoft spoke at a Mini-“Folkemødet” at the Tivoli Garden Castle – a small version of the annual People’s Meeting “Folkemødet”. “Folkemødet” is an open air festival about the society’s opportunities and challenges. The People’s Meeting is a political festival providing a unique platform for open debates between politicians, businesses, NGOs and common citizen. It aims at strengthening democracy and dialogue in our country and the seminars and encounters are free of charge and take place in an informal setting.

An engaging debate with the Vice-President of the Danish Confederation on women’s economic empowerment in Talk Town and an interview by 600 young teenagers in the City Hall complemented the President Lykketoft’s trip to Copenhagen.

The President also had the opportunity to meet HRH Crown Princess Mary, the patron of Women Deliver.

On 20 May, before continuing his travel to Qatar, Mr. Lykketoft was invited to the UN City in Copenhagen where the Danish Institute of International Studies had arranged a debate on UN at 70 and the selection of the next Secretary-General.
