Closing remarks: High-Level Conversation on Religions for Peace

Closing Statement by H.E. Mr Mogens Lykketoft,  President of the 70th session of the General Assembly, at High-Level Conversation on Religions for Peace

 6 May 2016

Thank you very much Mr. moderator.

Thank you also to our chairs, panelists, representatives of different religions and faith traditions, to the Alliance of Civilizations, UNESCO and the OIC for your pertinent contributions and to all Member States who participated here today.

The discussion has been wide ranging and deeply enriching not least because it brought together different perspectives on how best to promote tolerance and a culture of peace.

These are extremely worthy goals and I hope this conversation will support and strengthen inter-religious dialogue into the future.

I also trust that it has been helpful for Member States as they consider the 10 year review of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy as well as the Secretary-General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism.

And I hope that you will all keep today’s event in mind as you prepare for next week’s High-Level Thematic Debate on UN, peace and security.

I will circulate a President’s Summary from today’s conversation, in due course and will also make it publicly available on my web site.

Thank you.
