Statement attributable to the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mogens Lykketoft on new allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse by UN peacekeepers

31 March 2016

Statement from the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mogens Lykketoft on new allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse: The President will hold an informal briefing in the General Assembly.

The President is appalled by repeated reports and allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse by the very people meant to protect civilians and vulnerable populations in conflict and post conflict situations.

These reports and allegations must be addressed in a prompt, transparent and open manner.

Sexual exploitation and abuse have no place under any circumstances and betrays the values and principles of the UN.

The President fully supports the zero tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse, and recognizes the efforts and initiatives of the Secretary-General on the matter.

The President will organize an informal briefing in the General Assembly to further the engagement of all UN member States in swiftly and efficiently addressing this important issue.
