SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER REPORTED VIOLENT INCIDENTS IN EAST TIMOR

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General has been following with concern the reports of the recent violent incidents in East Timor which have resulted in the loss of life and are causing considerable human suffering.

The Secretary-General has called on all parties concerned to exercise restraint. It may be recalled that the Secretary-General is scheduled to hold meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia and Portugal on 19 and 20 June in New York on the question of East Timor.
