This fall, the World Tourism Organization and the UN Office for Partnerships will co-organize a conference on the topic of sustainable tourism and poverty alleviation.
This unique event will bring together leaders of the United Nations system, private sector and civil society to discuss current and future challenges related to sustainable tourism with a focus on its contribution towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The event will explore innovative solutions and share lessons learned on using tourism as a tool for creating new jobs, and enhancing education in developing countries, and creating sustainable communities. Participants will discuss how public-private partnerships in the field of sustainable tourism contribute to poverty alleviation.
The UN World Tourism Organization’s Sustainable Tourism for Eliminating Poverty Foundation (UNWTO ST-EP Foundation) was created to harness the developmental power of tourism in the fight against world poverty. Its origins and activities are intimately tied to the UN's Millennium Development Goals, which include the objective of halving extreme poverty by 2015. ST-EP is especially focused on people living on less than a dollar a day, and targets least developed countries, especially those in Africa.
As we near the event, further details will be published on this website.
