Policy Coherence and Aid Effectiveness - Are we there yet?
June 3-4, 2010

Civil society Organizations and the Private Sector engaging in the Millennium Development Goals – a panel discussion on Policy Coherence and Aid Effectiveness.

Preparatory to the biennial UN Development Cooperation Forum in New York the government of Finland will host a High-level Symposium in Helsinki from 3-4 June to facilitate a multi-stakeholder dialogue on policy coherence, aid effectiveness and mutual accountability.

In collaboration with the Economic and Social Council the United Nations Office for Partnerships is hosting a panel discussion on the role of the private sector and civil society organizations to increase aid effectiveness and policy coherence. This issue becomes especially important when looking at the changing nature of development assistance. Over the last decades a raft of new players has emerged and the need and demand for strategic, cross-sector partnerships has increased dramatically in response to changing ideas about how best to produce solutions to social and environmental problems while advancing economic opportunities for the world’s poor. This is especially true for the forward-thinking major corporations and foundations that are accepting the challenge of no longer being just the providers of funds, but rather active participants in addressing the complexities and challenges of persons living in extreme poverty in developing countries. At the same the United Nations provides the ability to unite and coordinate those seeking to make a difference.

The panel will be moderated by Amir Dossal, Executive Director, United Nations Office for Partnerships to discuss ideas of bringing the development community together to facilitate stronger country ownership, mutual accountability and capacity development.

All panelists will be invited to share their experiences and thoughts on the role of the private sector and civil society organizations in creating sustainable societies. In conclusion, participants will be challenged to come up with one new idea that will contribute to a new pathway of effective development cooperation.
