PRINCIPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS OMBUDSMAN'S OFFICE
In order to fulfil its role and promote fairness, the Office of the UN Ombudsman abides by the following principles:
Understanding and confidentiality - the Ombudsman will listen attentively to your concerns, in an atmosphere of complete safety from disclosure.
Neutrality - the neutrality of the Office of the Ombudsman will never be compromised.
Impartiality and objectivity in considering all situations brought to our attention.
Taking the concerns of all known parties to a dispute into account.
Every communication with the Ombudsman is considered privileged.
Deliberate independence from line and staff management structures - the Ombudsman reports directly to the Secretary-General.
Non-disclosure - we will never reveal the identity of anyone contacting the Ombudsman without his or her express permission.
All interactions with the Ombudsman are voluntary.
The Ombudsman provides an informal and off-the-record resource and cannot be called to testify or provide information for use in any administrative, disciplinary or judicial process.
Information on trends, issues, policies and practices will only be provided in a manner which does not breach confidentiality or anonymity.
Our processes facilitate fair and equitable resolution of problems that may arise with the Organization.
Not serving as an advocate for any person in a dispute - the Ombudsman does not advocate for any person. The Ombudsman advocates for fair processes and their fair administration.
Service with integrity - this is the Mission of the Ombudsman's Office.
