HOW CAN THE OMBUDSMAN HELP ME?

The Roles of the Ombudsman

How Can the Ombudsman Help Me?

The Ombudsman can help you resolve conflicts of any nature relating to your employment with the UN. The Office has a broad mandate to look into problems in a confidential manner and to assist in their informal resolution. It is an independent, neutral, confidential sounding board for employees with workplace issues.

The Ombudsman Helps You:

  • Evaluate your situation
  • Organize your thoughts
  • Assess your feelings
  • Decide what is important
  • Explore necessary actions
  • When to Contact the Ombudsman?

Individuals can contact the Ombudsman for help on any work-related problems, especially when a perspective outside of the formal UN channels would be helpful. She can be approached on issues relating conditions of employment, managerial practices, professional and staff relations, administration of benefits, interpersonal issues and standards of conduct.

Examples 1: Contact the Ombudsman when you want to:

    • Discuss a problem off the record.
    • Explore alternatives for resolving a problem.
    • Know what resources in the system are available.
    • Explore ways to get a problem to the surface without being at risk of retaliation.

Examples 2: Contact the Ombudsman when:

    • You are not ready to take formal action.
    • You want to address a systemic problem that does not seem to be getting attention.
    • You want to speak to someone who understands the policies and practices of the United Nations but who has no stake in the outcome.
