In April 2000, during the
International Decade of the World's Indigenous People, the Commission on Human Rights adopted a resolution
to establish the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
Three months later the Permanent Forum came into formal existence when ECOSOC, the Economic and Social Council, endorsed the resolution.
The Permanent Forum is an advisory body to the Economic and Social
Council. Its mandate is to discuss indigenous issues related to culture, economic and
social development, education, the environment, health and human rights.
