             The Nineteenth Special Session of the General Assembly, called to review progress achieved five years afterthe United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, recognized the need to move toward sustainable patterns in the production, distribution and use of energy.
             The Energy and Transport Branch of the Division for Sustainable Development provides advisory services to Governments, and technically supports energy projects at the field level with a focus on increasing the supply of energy services in developing countries, particularly in rural areas, and managing the demand for energy, largely through energy efficiency efforts, capacity building, promoting increased energy investments and expanding the role of the private sector and local communities.
