principles for guiding United Nations decolonization efforts, including respect
for self-determination of all peoples.
Chapter XII

International Trusteeship System and
Chapter XIII
establishes the
Trusteeship Council to monitor
Trust Territories.
In 1960, the General Assembly adopted
The Declaration on Decolonization to help speed progress on decolonization,
followed by establishment of
The Special Committee on Decolonization, in 1962, to monitor and to make
recommendations on the application and implementation of this Declaration.
The Decolonization Unit of the Department of Political Affairs, provides substantive
support to the Special Committee, known as the
"Special Committee of 24 on Decolonization", and to support the General Assembly as that Main Body reviews
the issues relating to decolonization. |
