RIAD APPOINTED AT THE TRIBUNAL IN REPLACEMENT OF JUDGE ABI-SAAB
After consultation
with the Presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly, the Secretary-General
of the United Nations has appointed today Mr. Fouad Abdel-Moneim RIAD, as a
Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
Mr. Fouad RIAD,
from Egypt, will serve the remainder of the term of office of Mr. Georges ABI-SAAB,
also from Egypt, who was a Judge of the Tribunal since 17 November 1993 and
who resigns in order to resume his academic activities.
Biographical
note of Judge Riad
Judge Riad (born
in 1928, in Caïro) has a long career as Professor of Law at Cairo University;
he also taught at New York, Paris, and The Hague. Judge Riad has published a
number of books and articles in Arabic, English, and French. He has also been
active as Arbitrator and International legal consultant.
In 1977 and 1978,
he chaired the Plenary Committee of the UN Conference on State Succession to
Treaties.
He
is a member of the Institut de droit international, and served from 1993 to
1995 as Vice-President. Since 1990, he is the President of the Egyptian Society
of International Law.
