PRESIDENT THEODOR
MERON TO ATTEND SREBRENICA GENOCIDE 10th ANNIVERSARY
COMMEMORATION AT POTOCARI MEMORIAL
At the invitation of Sulejman
Tihic, Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the President
of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
(ICTY), Judge Theodor Meron, will attend the commemoration of the
10th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide in Potocari
on 11 July, 2005.
By attending the ceremony, President
Meron wants to clearly demonstrate the Tribunal’s solidarity with
the victims and to show compassion to those whose loved ones were
killed during the genocide. He will be paying tribute to the dignity
and the courage of the victims and their families in the face of
the unspeakable suffering that they have had to endure.
President Meron will speak of
the Tribunal’s judgements on the Srebrenica genocide and the role
of the Tribunal in trying to bring to justice the perpetrators of
these horrific crimes.
President Meron will once again call for the arrest and transfer
of Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic. As he stated at the United
Nations Security Council earlier this month, the Tribunal will not
have fulfilled its historic mission – and it will not close its
doors – until Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic have been brought
to The Hague and tried before the Tribunal in accordance with the
full procedural protections recognized by our jurisprudence.
