The President of the ICTY, Judge Fausto Pocar will introduce Prosecutor Serge Brammertz to the diplomatic community at tomorrow’s Diplomatic Seminar. Representatives of about 80 Embassies will then be briefed on the activities of the Tribunal by the President, Prosecutor and Registrar Hans Holthuis.
President Pocar and Prosecutor Brammertz met yesterday with the Prime Minister of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Nikola Gruevski.
Among important decisions delivered last week, the Trial Chamber ordered the Office of the Prosecutor to return the four casefiles to the Macedonian judiciary for their handling.
The Appeals Chamber of the Tribunal denied Croatia’s request for review of the Trial Chamber’s decision not to grant provisional release to Ante Gotovina. Gotovina’s co-accused General Mladen Markač withdrew his appeal against duty judge’s order late December for his arrest and transfer back to the Tribunal’s detention unit after he violated the conditions of his provisional release.
And to the court schedule now: Five trials are being heard before the Tribunal this week.
This afternoon’s session in the Haradinaj and others case is scheduled to be the last hearing, bringing three-day’s of closing arguments to a close.
Trials against Šešelj, Milutinović and others, Popović and others, as well as Prlić and others are in session for the remainder of this week.
As of next week, the trial of Vojislav Šešelj’s will resume its usual pace, starting Tuesday morning at 8:30 am in court room I.
With the last Prosecution witness testifying this week in the case of Prlić and others, a Rule 98bis hearing has been scheduled for next week, starting Monday January 28 at 2.15pm in courtroom III. As you know, Rule 98bis allows the Trial Chamber to - at the end of the Prosecutor’s case, and after hearing oral submissions of the parties, enter a judgment of acquittal on any count if there is no evidence capable of supporting a conviction.
The pre-defence conference in the case of Boškoski and Tarčulovski will begin on Tuesday 29 at 2:15 pm in courtroom II. The defence of Boškoski is due to start on next Wednesday at 9:00am in courtroom III.
