Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry
and Chambers, made the following statement:
The President of the Tribunal, Judge
Fausto Pocar, was at a conference in
Berlin yesterday entitled "60 Years
after the Nuremberg Trials – Lessons
for the Future". Judge Schomburg
also attended the event, which was organized
by The American Academy in Berlin and
hosted by the German Ministry of Justice.
You should all have received our media
advisory from yesterday evening, letting
you know that the Milosevic trial has
been adjourned until Tuesday of next
week and ordering that further medical
information from the cardiologist be
submitted to the Trial Chamber.
ICTY Outreach, in conjunction with the
Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development,
Assistance and Training (OPDAT) of the
U.S. Department of Justice and the OSCE
in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
(FYROM), organised a judicial training
seminar entitled "International Criminal
Law Standards In Prosecuting, Defending,
And Adjudicating Serious Crimes With
Focus On Crimes Proscribed By The International
Criminal Law". The seminar was held on
18 and 19 November in Skopje and it was
attended by Judges, Prosecutors and Defence
Counsel from FYROM. The speakers included
representatives of the ICTY, as well
as their colleagues from the judiciaries
in the region, namely – Bosnia
and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo and
FYROM. The seminar was funded by OPDAT
in conjunction with the OSCE.
Florence Hartmann, Spokesperson for
the Office of the Prosecutor, made the
following statement:
We are surprised by the speculations
coming in the last days from Belgrade
regarding the contents of the forthcoming
Prosecutor's report to the Security Council.
As you know, she is due to address the
Council on 15 December, and a written
assessment will be forwarded towards
the end of November. Unfortunately, there
has been no progress on the fugitives
since April this year when Pavkovic was
handed over to the Tribunal and we are
still facing serious obstacles in the
access to the documents. The obstruction
is mainly coming from the Army. Ms Del
Ponte wishes to underline that the top
priority has been and is still the arrest
of the seven remaining fugitives, among
them Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic.
Regarding the allegation in some articles
yesterday in Belgrade, let me make it
clear: there cannot be full cooperation
until Belgrade has handed over Mladic
and the other fugitives within its reach
to the Tribunal. Unrestricted access
to documents and witnesses is another
precondition for full co-operation. If
serious progress happens in the meanwhile,
of course the report will reflect it.
