Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following
statement:
Firstly, as you are aware from our press
release, on Monday 10 October, President
Meron addressed the 60th session
of the UN General Assembly on the ICTY’s
Annual Report. I thought it might be
of interest to share with you the very
positive reactions following President
Meron’s speech in statements made
by a number of member states about the
work of the Tribunal as outlined in the
Annual Report.
None of the member states who chose
to make a statement made any negative
comments about the work of the Tribunal.
To the contrary, the Tribunal was praised
for its efficiency, its commitment to
ending impunity and its contribution
to international humanitarian law. In
this spirit, member states Norway, Malaysia,
Tanzania, and the United Kingdom (on
behalf of the States of the European
Union), called on member states to honor
their financial commitments to the ICTY
to ensure that the Tribunal is not frustrated
in the execution of its mandate.
What is also very clear from the
statements is that the international
community shares the concern of the Tribunal
that the ICTY should not close its doors
without trying the remaining fugitives
and in particular, Gotovina, Mladic and
Karadzic.
From the reactions to the Annual Report
and to President Meron’s address
to the General Assembly, it is clear
that the Tribunal currently enjoys the
full support of the international community
and the efforts made by the judges and
staff to implement the completion strategy,
without sacrificing due process, have
been recognized and praised.
The Milosevic trial next week will be
on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
In addition to the ongoing trials, in
the coming weeks status conferences will
be held in in The Prosecutor v. Rasevic
and Todovic on Thursday 20 October
at 2.15 p.m. in Courtroom II; in The
Prosecutor v. Mico Stanisic on Tuesday
25 October at 2.15 p.m. in Courtroom
III; in The Prosecutor v. Momcilo
Perisic on Tuesday 25 October at
3 p.m. in Courtroom II; and in The
Prosecutor v. Marijacic and Rebic on
Wednesday 26 October at 3 p.m. in Courtroom
III.
There will be no trials this Monday
as it is a UN holiday.
Florence Hartmann, Spokesperson for
the Office of the Prosecutor, made no
statement.
Asked whether there was a decision on
the consolidated indictment against the
four Croatian journalists, Landale answered
that he believed not but that he would
double check.
Asked when the OTP would be lodging
its appeal in the Haradinaj case against
the Trial Chamber decision to re-assess
Haradinaj’s conditions of provisional
release, Hartmann responded that the
Prosecution had sevel days in which to
appeal and that it would be ready to
do so within that time frame. She added
that the Prosecution had also submitted
a motion to stay the decision on the
re-assessment of the conditions and that
the defence had until last Monday, 17
October, to respond, after which the
Trial Chamber would render its decision.
Asked whether there was any further
information on the transfer of Milan
Lukic from Argentina, Landale answered
that there was not, stressing that it
was a matter of working through the legal,
practical and logistical arrangements.
He said that the Tribunal hoped there
would be some movement soon. He added
that the same was true for Zelenovic
who had been arrested in Russia.
