Background

On 9 August 2010, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability to “reflect on and formulate a new vision for sustainable growth and prosperity, along with mechanisms for achieving it”, in light of the growing strain placed on our planet by climate change, biodiversity loss, food insecurity and other interlinked challenges.  The Panel was co-chaired by H.E. Ms. Tarja Halonen, President of Finland, and H.E. Mr. Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa, and included 20 more authoritative world figures.  On 30 January 2012 the Panel submitted its report to the Secretary-General, who in turn forwarded it to the UN membership under General Assembly agenda item 12 (a) “Sustainable Development” (document A/66/700). In his Note transmitting the report, the Secretary-General encourages Member States to consider the Panel’s recommendations thoroughly and inscribe those that are ripe for immediate decision in the outcome of Rio+20.
