After the Adoption of the Resolution: Necessity of ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo Imposed by the United States of America against Cuba
New York, 28 October 2009
Excellencies,
As in previous years, the General Assembly has pronounced itself on this agenda item through adoption of a resolution with overwhelming support of the Member States.
In doing so, the international community has expressed determination to encourage strict compliance with the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
It is my sincere hope that calls for implementation of this resolution will be heeded.
Today, there is growing support for dialogue and multilateralism. We should support and strengthen these positive trends, which can open new avenues for peace and development.
It is against this background that I sincerely hope that the United States and Cuba could find ways for resolving their differences through dialogue and cooperation.
Thank you.
