On the Occasion of the Presentation before the General Assembly of the Annual Report of the International Court of Justice
New York, 29 October 2009
(Before the presentation):
On behalf of all Member States of the General Assembly, I welcome Judge Hishashi Owada, president of the International Court of Justice and invite him to present the Court’s annual report for the period 1 August 2008 to 31 July 2009 (A/64/4).
(After the presentation):
I thank the president of the International Court of Justice for his report. Since his election as the Court’s president on 6 February 2009, Judge Owada has continued the Court’s efforts aimed at expediting proceedings before it enabling the Court to discharge its mandate.
As the principal judicial organ of the United Nations whose creation represents the culmination of a long process of development of methods for the pacific settlement of international disputes, the role of the ICJ in the promotion of the rule of law and the enhancement of international peace and security cannot be over emphasized. It is therefore hoped that Member states will continue to support the Court by affording it all required assistance and providing the enabling environment necessary for the enhancement of its performance and by renewing the undertaking to comply with the decisions of the Court.
