NOTE ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On 26 September 2009 the President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, met separately with the Prime Minister of Guinea Bissau and the Deputy Foreign Minister of Macedonia. During these meetings, a number of important issues on the agenda of the sixty-fourth Session were discussed.
Earlier in the morning, Dr. Treki delivered a statement at the Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of the Alliance of Civilizations. Later in the afternoon, the President of the General Assembly attended the Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with His Excellency Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, serving as Chairman of ASEAN; Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, the Secretary-General of ASEAN; and His Excellency Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations. The meeting is an annual event which provides an opportunity for the ASEAN Foreign Ministers, the PGA and the UN SG to exchange views on matters of mutual interest and represents the growing close cooperation between regional organizations and the United Nations.
